Scott's Oscar Picks
Just for fun, I thought I would make my Oscar picks. I always like to pick them really early because the day of the Oscar's everyone knows who is gonna win, so I am laying it out early.
Best Actress: Viola Davis - The Help / Michelle Williams - My Week With Marilyn / Meryl Streep- The Iron Lady / Glenn Close - Albert Nobbs / Rooney Mara - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
This is the most competitive category. I bet people still say there are no good parts for women in film. (The truth is there are no good parts in movies; they are all on TV now.) I really and truly want Glenn Close to win because she has never won before and to me that matters. Glenn has created some of the most amazing characters ever put on screen and she deserves to be an Oscar winner. But she won't. I believe Meryl Streep breaks a 29 year losing streak.
Best Actor: George Clooney - The Descendants/ Jean Dujardin - The Artist/ Gary Oldman - Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy / Demian Bichir - A Better Life / Brad Pitt - Moneyball.
I really want Brad Pitt to win. He was so good and so un-Brad Pitt in Moneyball. But he already has Angelina and that means he doesn't get an Oscar. The truth is if George Clooney directs a political picture that year, the Academy gives him an acting award for the more commercial movie. George wins because the Academy likes his speeches. (Check out my other Oscar Blog about how I think the winners should thank people.)
Best Supporting Actress - Octavia Spencer - The Help / Melissa McCarthy - Bridesmaids / Berenice Bejo - The Artist / Jessica Chastain - The Help / Janet McTeer - Albert Nobbs.
This one is Octavia's to lose and she can't because this award traditionally goes to someone they decide can now have a real career. Octavia your career awaits you. Try to not take Mira Sorvino's path.
Best Supporting Actor - Christopher Plummer - Beginners / Nick Nolte - Warrior / Kenneth Branagh - My Week With Marilyn / Jonah Hill - Moneyball / Max Von Sydow - Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
The hills are alive with the sound of Christopher Plummer winning an Oscar. I have to say, Jonah Hill had a great part and he played it perfectly but just like Melissa McCarthy, their win is being a comedian who was nominated.
Best Director - Michel Hazanavicius - The Artist / Terrence Malick - The Tree Of Life / Martin Scorsese - Hugo / Alexander Payne - The Descendants / Woody Allen - Midnight In Paris.
I can not believe that they will have to tell people, we didn't give Martin one for Goodfellas but we did for the kid movie he made. But that is what will happen. Martin should be a four time winner by now and he will have to settle for being a two timer. Raging Bull - NO. Hugo - YES. Oh, Academy, it's a good thing your specialty isn't movies.
Best Picture - The Artist / The Descendants/ Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close / The Help / Hugo / Midnight in Paris / Moneyball / Tree of Life / War Horse
First and foremost, let me say "who cares". This is the best of the year? That is sad. Moneyball is the best picture up there. It really was a different, good movie but good movies don't win this award, important ones do. They will give it to The Help to feel good about themselves. And no one will remember in a year.
